heraldry for interiors

Bespoke heraldic art and tapestries for historic and contemporary interiors.

Heraldry was never intended to exist only on paper. For centuries it has appeared on shields, banners, textiles, furniture, stained glass and architectural decoration — bringing identity, colour and continuity to the spaces in which people live.

Andrew continues that tradition today, creating individually designed heraldic pieces for private houses, historic properties and contemporary interiors.

heraldry in the interior

A painted shield, banner, tapestry or heraldic textile can give a room something increasingly rare: decoration with personal meaning.

Heraldry can sit naturally within a historic setting, but its strong forms, colour and symbolism can be equally effective in a contemporary interior. A single shield may provide a restrained focal point; a group of banners, armorial panels or textiles can form part of a more extensive decorative scheme.

The aim is never to create pastiche, but to allow an ancient decorative language to live confidently in the present.

designed for the setting

Each commission begins with the heraldry and the interior in which it will be placed.

Scale, proportion, colour and materials are considered so that the finished piece belongs naturally within its surroundings. A design intended for a manuscript page cannot simply be enlarged onto a shield or banner; it must be redrawn and adapted with an understanding of both heraldry and decorative art.

Andrew's specialist training and more than four decades of professional practice inform this process. The heraldry remains correct. The interpretation and design are created for the setting.

Painted shields, banners, tapestries, cushions and other bespoke heraldic furnishings can be commissioned individually or as part of a related scheme.

Each is conceived as something personal, made rather than manufactured, and intended to endure.

Heraldry has decorated great interiors for centuries. There is no reason it should belong only to the past.
